Wireman's
licence
The Electricity Supply Regulations (Regulations 15 and 16) stipulate that
installations that are not carried out by (or under the direction and
responsibility of) a person authorised to carry out the particular class of
work, shall not be connected to the distribution system.
In particular, there are two classes of licences:
Wireman’s
Licence A for electricians authorised to carry out single phase installations only.
Wireman’s
Licence B for electricians authorised to carry out single and three phase
installations.
In addition, the design of an installation rated at 300 amps per phase or over and the test on completion must be certified by an electrical engineer.
The Wireman’s licence is issued by the MRA on the recommendation of the Electricity
Licensing Board to persons who:
have passed the wireman’s examination;
have at least 18 years of age; and
have completed
at least one year of experience in electrical installation work for
Licence A and two years experience for Licence B.
The syllabus for the examination is set by the Electricity
Licensing Board and the examination is held once a year by the
Registrar of Examinations of the Ministry for Education.
