In
the context of the implementation of the European Union (EU)
Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Malta Resources Authority
(MRA) has launched a project for the development of the
programme of measures in the Maltese Water Catchment District.
The project focuses on groundwater resources and aims at
identifying the least cost option for restoring the status of
groundwater resources in line with the requirements of the WFD.
This project is
an EU-funded Twinning Light project implemented in partnership
with the Ministry of
Ecology & Sustainable Development from France, assisted by
the International Office for
Water. The project started in January 2007 and it will end
in June 2007.

Project News:
Denis Besozzi,
water engineer in charge of international relation at the
Rhin-Meuse water agency (France), and Pierre Strosser,
economist from the International Office for Water team, have
visited Malta from February 5 to 9, 2007 as part of the Twinning
Light project activities. The main focus of this visit was on
issues linked to the water supply and sewage, e.g. today’s
pressures on water resources, future trends in water demand and
water services (including the implementation of the Urban
Wastewater Treatment Directive), possible measures for reducing
the pressures from the municipal and tourism sector on
groundwater resources.
Alain Verlhac,
water engineer in charge of industries at the Loire-Bretagne
water agency, Yannick Pochon, water management specialist
at the International Office for Water, Jean-Daniel Rinaudo,
economist at BRGM and Pierre Strosser, economist from the
International Office for Water team, are visiting Malta from
February 26 to March 9, 2007 as part of the Twinning Light
project activities. Issues investigated during their visit
include pressures from industry on water resources, IPPC,
potential measures for the industry sector, but also the wider
framework for selecting measures building on technical and
economic assessments and on a consultation process.
