Isotope
Technology for Groundwater Management
This project comprised a study that applies isotope technology to groundwater management. The tracing of groundwater by means of environmental isotopes offers a versatile approach to acquire information on the origin, migration and storage of groundwater, from the recharge surface to the point of storage. Analysis of both stable and radioactive isotopes, in groundwater and rainwater
was performed.
Rain and groundwater samples were collected and analysed at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) laboratories, for
18O, 2H and 3H. Results are correlated with the Global Mean Water Line
(GMWL) and the Mediterranean Mean Water Line (MMWL) that represents two regression lines between
18O and 2H for rain water at global level and for the Eastern Mediterranean.
